A very self-respecting homemaker today must have long-lasting knives that she has kept and used throughout the years, and which have been part of countless preparations for joyous family gatherings and other memorable occasions.

Good knives are an investment. Here are 7 tips and guidelines on the care of your knives to ensure a lifetime of use.

1.	Always remember that even stainless knives are never 100 percent rustproof. Therefore, one must rinse off acids (e.g., contained in fruit and vegetable juices, mustard and ketchup) from the blade immediately after use. Stains can be removed by standard metal cleaners.
2.	Cleaning dishwasher – When loading the dishwasher, make sure the blades do not touch other objects.
3.	Cleaning by hand – For extra care, knives should be cleaned by hand. After use, simply hold the knife under lukewarm water and clean with soft cloth. If necessary add a little washing-up liquid. Dry knives immediately.
4.	Do not misuse your knives. A knife is not a screwdriver or a can opener. It is entirely unsuitable for these purposes. Misuse may damage the cutting edge.
5.	Protect plastic handles from heat. Do not place knives on heated hotplates; heat can distort the handle.
6.	Use a suitable cutting surface. Even high-quality knives lose some of their sharpness through regular use, but unsuitable cutting surface such as porcelain or metal will blunt a knife prematurely. Cutting surface should be easy to clean and of a non-rigid nature.
7.	Store knives safely. Knives require a safe storage place. This will prevent accidental injury and protect the blade from being damaged. A knife block fulfills this dual function to perfection.
