I was gonna say… I’ve only really ever delt with scooters but the compression from the right exhast makes a huge difference in how the car runs. Most often the scoot is already tuned as best it can when it leaves the factory floor so its only down hill from there.
You can’t increase the MPG once the gas has been burned by attaching some “filter” to the tailpipe. This sounds like the “100 MPG Carburetor” in new clothing.”
I agree, this just sounds like its restricting exhaust which would DECREASE mpg.
By blocking the tail-pipe they’re creating extra back pressure. Extra back pressure makes it hard for the engine to vent exhaust, therefore it can’t get more air into the engine and in order to keep the mixture right it will spray less fuel. So you’ll burn less fuel with each stroke. You’ll also lose power and to make up for that lost power you’ll have to dump more fuel into the engine and you’ll end up right back where you started.
Letting the air flow through easier makes the motor work less and increases fuel mileage. Look into aftermarket free flow style mufflers and aftermarket performance catalytic converters. This device on the other hand is nothing more than a filter and WONT help fuel mileage. It may even hurt it.
And if you eat it, it will increase the size of that particular part of the male body…I call *****. Just another shady-ass company trying to score big bucks off a new eco-friendly fad. That guy in the video even looks like he probably sells/sold eXtenz. The sad thing is, just like penis enlarging pills, this product will sell due to the gullibility of people, and more companies will rush in with more fake crap to get a part of the action.
The stomach?
Carfag here, there’s no way it can increase the volumetric efficiency of an engine without having been specifically designed for that engine. Getting better VE is what carfags spend tons of money at a dyno for.
It could be that the average engine benefits from a little more back pressure from the muffler.
Why not? It’s not like the laws of physics and thermodynamics tell us that restricting expansion will cause something to burn inefficiently. . .Oh, wait.
B-B-but.. Sheryl Crow, Ben Harper, Laura Dern and Crystal Method believe on it! So it must be true!
Funny how these marvelous mileage things are always invented in some secret place and sold only on late night TV.
How is a filter a new innovation?
“And it increases the volumetric efficiency of the engine”The article had me until that point. You know this thing is a load of crap when it makes up a term like “volumetric efficiency”. A better catalytic converter? Maybe; hell all it needs to do is act like a second one and it will capture additional carbon-monoxide that would have originally escaped. But the vendors had to get greedy and start making claims like “improves gas mileage” and now I’m convinced everything about it is snake oil.
Exactly what I was thinking.Though I think every car should have such a filter on the exhaust pipe by default. They con’t convince me that it will improve fuel efficiency.
How did I manage to make con’t out of can’t?The a and o aren’t even remotely close together.*facepalm at himself*
The term volumetric efficiency has been in use for a long time, they did not make it up. It refers to the ability of an engine to fill the cylinders completely thus running as efficiently as possible. Forced induction (IE turbo or super chargers) increase VE. Adding a filter to the exhaust might filter out a few things but it will certainly be a restriction and having a clogged exhaust most definitely does not improve volumetric efficiency!
Bury as inaccurate.
You’d do about as well to stick you dick in the tail pipe. Any obstruction t your cars exhaust system will decrease efficiency, end of story. Well, if ou’re running a turbo then a little back pressure can aid in spool up, but that’s about it.
I was thinking the same thing. Most people are trying to make less back pressure not increase it.
Sticking a filter on the end of your tailpipe may very well clean the exhaust a bit, but there’s no way it’s gonna make your engine more volumetrically efficient.
I was going to say the same thing. There is a reason those ricers have larger and louder tailpipes.
Because they’re loud. It has little to do with performance.
This is *****. There is no way that you can improve fuel efficiency by adding a restriction to the exhaust.
Who cares if it increases MPG? As long as people use it maybe we can get rid of that brown crap in the air every summer.
You know what, you’re right, lets just stick these filters on our huge SUVs so that we get 5 miles per gallon, but who cares, we filter out half of the bad *****. It’s not like burning twice as much gas will negate any filtering benefit./s
If you like that product, let me point you in the direction of another great product made by the same people. extenzeforlife.com/
i wonder how well this would work to get a car to pass smog if it can’t pass smog before hand.
considering it will block the exhaust pipe preventing the technicians from sticking the exhaust sniffer into it… I think they wont be so thrilled!
not to mention likely throw a fault code that will fail your car automatically if it’s a newer model that they actually plug into the emissions computer.
How are they going to stick a probe up the tail pipe with a ***** filter on it? This is all *****.
Also, something like that will auto fail you.
we will all have super powers to fly in the year 2011 anyway, so none of this matters
I agree, either that or the earth will be destroyed a meteorite by the end of 2012.
Not if Hiro recovers his father’s secret formula!
But with our new found super powers we will be able to stop the meteorite
The most eco-friendly mode of transportation is to walk or bike; it makes your butt shrink too.
walking burns to many calories which mean more food production which is bad for the enviroment. just sit on your couch all day and watch opra like the rest of us if you want to help the envorment skinny boy…but really the bicycle is really the most efficient mode of transportation man has ever mass produced.
Sorry, but the bicycle is the SECOND most efficient mode of transportation man has ever mass produced. You’re forgetting this one: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/79/IT_% …
Sweet! If I combine that with one of these: shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=t … I’ll get 50% more MPG!!!!/facepalm
is that some kind of ***** up cookie cutter?
It’s something that you’re supposed to install in your intake, pre-MAF, and the MAF will normalize all air flow any way, so you would basically be buying a 30$ piece of twisted metal to decrease the efficiency of your car’s cold air intake.
This is just an advert.
Sounds like smoke and mirrors to me.
Snake oil; please bury as spam.
I hate ***** like you who are so negative and don’t give anyone the benefit of the doubt. They should BURY YOU as ***** spam. You dick head. Go ***** yourself you prick.
But does it come in ricer size?
How did this retarded spam get to the first page?
hippies who hate science.
Looks like a great way to increase your back pressure enough to fill the cabin full of dream-land inducing carbon monoxide…..
I wish the buzz word green would go away.
I love you.
No, you idiot.
total crap. treehugger is full of *****, and I’m pro-green. No amount of filtering could possibly effect gas mileage, basic science fail. and if all it took to cut down emissions was a filter it would be used by every manufacturer who has to meet emissions standards. from now on treehugger.com=buried.
This is such a load of crap. Restricting your exhaust will cause your car to lose power which will LOWER your fuel efficiency.
Well if Sheryl Crow, Ben Harper, Laura Dern and the Crystal method are into it, it must be true.
it goes woo wooooooo
that’s only in the mawnin you’re supposed to be up cookin breakfast or somethin
It’s like a alarm clock.
burrid, dumb
buy a go-kart
Bury this *****. It’s been around for ages. who the ***** diggs this ***** up, anyway?
Sounds like a cash grab to me.
Ok, a friend tried one of these and has an article about to come out in a sanfran newspaper. This ***** doesn’t do jack on a motorcycle except make the muffler about 30f hotter because of back pressure. Ok it’s not a car, and motorcycles do not go through emissions tests like cars, but he gave it a whirl. It damn near blew his exhaust gaskets out; they crumbled within 1k miles on a trip to the mountains.Like I said it wasn’t a car but he took the effort to shoe-horn the damn thing on his bike exhaust to see what it did.Leave it up to the manufacturers if you want something like this on your vehicle, that’s all I can say. If GM or Ford or anyone can improve millage you best damn be sure that they will do it and sell it on their vehicles.
100% complete *****?
Surprised they didn’t put a mini impeller in it to sound like a turbo.
but how will i get that bawwwwww sound from my civic?
no the most eco friendly inovation was $4.20 a gallon gas. to bad its back to $2.70 here. oh well time to start selling the suvs again =)
Buullllllllshhhhhiiiiiittttt! Yes, let’s stick a filter on the end of the tailpipe which will cause a BACKPRESSURE on the engine. Yes, and we’ll tell them that no, it won’t decrease your MPG but it’ll magically increase it! Yes, yes, yes!!! (no, No, **NO!!!!**)
*****.
This thing will increase your fuel economy about as much as Bubb Rubb and Lil Sis. youtube.com/watch?v=ccgXjA2BLEYAfter reading this blatant ad disguised as a blog post I will never click another TreeHugger story again.
Better versions youtube.com/watch?v=jpl_ey5cVnk&feature … youtube.com/watch?v=J6lo9Km5HaU
For $199, I’d rather buy an actual turbo off eBay. Improved VE, improved HP and torque, improved MPG (as compared to a larger engine), and virtually no change in emissions.
You’re not buying a turbocharger for $199.
ebay Item # 290268339553 for my civic = $198.00 so I guess you are right. Just need a manifold and intake. But it was partly a joke.
lurrker: just a manifold and intake…and you’d be set?..hahaha. You need an intercooler, bov, exhaust and fuel management, gauges *at least* for a *somewhat* proper job, that right there is around 2000-4000 dollars. Otherwise you’ll just end up with a nice blown engine. The T28 price is pretty dirt cheap but there’s gotta be something wrong with it.
for < 5 psi? Don’t need all that. More than 5, you need injectors, ecu reflash, and bov. Again, it was a joke, to put the price vs “performance” into perspective. I’m sure I’d enjoy the turbo for at least 3 years, that would be ~$300 worth of filters for this junk. Yes, I’ve read Corky Bell’s turbo book. I know what you are trying to say.
It could increase back pressure, which would = more exhaust stays in the cylinder for the next cycle = more pressure = more power for same amount of fuel. However I doubt this think makes your engine 5mpg better, maybe 1mpg on a good day.
That’s what I was thinking, but I don’t think you will get get more pressure in the cylinder during the combustion cycle because less air will enter during intake as there is more pressure left after exhaust. Also, this exhaust air will be low on oxidizer, and since there will most likely be some unburnt fuel in that exhaust air which your fuel injector doesn’t know about, you will end up running a rich mixture and thus your MPG will suffer.I could be wrong though, I’m just a layman.
The thing with most after market car devices: If they worked as well as advertised, don’t you think the car manufacturers would put it in the car, or at least offer it as an option?
It would cost millions of dollars to do that. Imagine if it cost $100+ to add it on each car. What happens when a car manufacturer has to add this to 1,000,000 cars? If it’s not required by the gov’t, they’re not going to mess with it.
Stuffing a potato wrapped in rags will also reduce your cars emissions. Buried as complete hokum.
A useless filter you’ve got a cat converter or two already doing the same thing, don’t expect any sympathy for buying something retarded like this.
THIS IS SCAM. it has been around for years, and does nothing.
Well ***** Sheryl “I only use one square of toilet paper to wipe my ass” Crow likes it. I’m in, man. Sign me up.
Nothing beats my mustang, and by mustang I mean my horse, which I ride to work everyday, in my mind.
and it pumps Smug directly into your car!
I thought it would be a bicycle XD
Do they make one big enough for my Fart can hahahha. In all seriousness, i couldnt get past, 2 mins of the video, he is a blabbering fool. and yes, all you do is stick it on the end and bolt it down, and if u have a dual tip muffler, looks like they will soak you for 2! and if ur tip is curved down, they are going to have to cut it to make it even, then once you realize that this is bologna, and you remove it, your stock exhaust will suck!
This is why you shouldn’t get engineering news from a ***** hippie site. These people are incredibly stupid if they think a filter attached to the end your tailpipe increases the efficiency of a vehicle.
Atmos?
Who you going to call? Mythbusters!
Auto companies spend millions of dollars and thousands of hours developing catalytic converters specifically designed for the car that they are put on to get the maximum performance and efficiency. It seem highly unlikely that some $200 gadget is the magic bullet fix-all that the auto industry has been missing. Show me some real data to back you claims then we’ll talk.

No. It will plug up you exhaust and mess your engines performance. Stupid gimmick to get money from dumb people.
