Is This the Most Eco-Friendly Car Innovation Since Hybrid?

Forget hydrogen. The most eco-friendly thing to happen to cars since the hybrid might just be an after-market device that attaches to your tail pipe and costs a mere $199.

Looks like a great way to increase your back pressure enough to fill the cabin full of dream-land inducing carbon monoxide…..

  2. Cyan

I wish the buzz word green would go away.

  3. Giselle

    I love you.

  4. Fannie

    No, you idiot.

  5. Machiko

total crap. treehugger is full of *****, and I’m pro-green. No amount of filtering could possibly effect gas mileage, basic science fail. and if all it took to cut down emissions was a filter it would be used by every manufacturer who has to meet emissions standards. from now on treehugger.com=buried.

  6. Valmai

This is such a load of crap. Restricting your exhaust will cause your car to lose power which will LOWER your fuel efficiency.

  7. Walda

Well if Sheryl Crow, Ben Harper, Laura Dern and the Crystal method are into it, it must be true.

  8. Bina

    it goes woo wooooooo

  9. Usra

that’s only in the mawnin you’re supposed to be up cookin breakfast or somethin

  10. Urit

    It’s like a alarm clock.

  11. Curtis

    burrid, dumb

  12. Etana

    buy a go-kart

  13. Otis

Bury this *****. It’s been around for ages. who the ***** diggs this ***** up, anyway?

  14. Umay

Sounds like a cash grab to me.

  15. Ye

Ok, a friend tried one of these and has an article about to come out in a sanfran newspaper. This ***** doesn’t do jack on a motorcycle except make the muffler about 30f hotter because of back pressure. Ok it’s not a car, and motorcycles do not go through emissions tests like cars, but he gave it a whirl. It damn near blew his exhaust gaskets out; they crumbled within 1k miles on a trip to the mountains.Like I said it wasn’t a car but he took the effort to shoe-horn the damn thing on his bike exhaust to see what it did.Leave it up to the manufacturers if you want something like this on your vehicle, that’s all I can say. If GM or Ford or anyone can improve millage you best damn be sure that they will do it and sell it on their vehicles.

  16. Jag

    100% complete *****?

  17. Rahima

Surprised they didn’t put a mini impeller in it to sound like a turbo.

  18. Lin

but how will i get that bawwwwww sound from my civic?

  19. Myeisha

no the most eco friendly inovation was $4.20 a gallon gas. to bad its back to $2.70 here. oh well time to start selling the suvs again =)

  20. Yeardleigh

Buullllllllshhhhhiiiiiittttt! Yes, let’s stick a filter on the end of the tailpipe which will cause a BACKPRESSURE on the engine. Yes, and we’ll tell them that no, it won’t decrease your MPG but it’ll magically increase it! Yes, yes, yes!!! (no, No, **NO!!!!**)

  21. Nehemiah

    *****.

  22. Damita

This thing will increase your fuel economy about as much as Bubb Rubb and Lil Sis. youtube.com/watch?v=ccgXjA2BLEYAfter reading this blatant ad disguised as a blog post I will never click another TreeHugger story again.

  23. Tut

    Better versions youtube.com/watch?v=jpl_ey5cVnk&feature … youtube.com/watch?v=J6lo9Km5HaU

  24. Syler

For $199, I’d rather buy an actual turbo off eBay. Improved VE, improved HP and torque, improved MPG (as compared to a larger engine), and virtually no change in emissions.

  25. Philena

    You’re not buying a turbocharger for $199.

  26. Valora

ebay Item # 290268339553 for my civic = $198.00 so I guess you are right. Just need a manifold and intake. But it was partly a joke.

  27. Josue

lurrker: just a manifold and intake…and you’d be set?..hahaha. You need an intercooler, bov, exhaust and fuel management, gauges *at least* for a *somewhat* proper job, that right there is around 2000-4000 dollars. Otherwise you’ll just end up with a nice blown engine. The T28 price is pretty dirt cheap but there’s gotta be something wrong with it.

  28. Jafaru

for < 5 psi? Don’t need all that. More than 5, you need injectors, ecu reflash, and bov. Again, it was a joke, to put the price vs “performance” into perspective. I’m sure I’d enjoy the turbo for at least 3 years, that would be ~$300 worth of filters for this junk. Yes, I’ve read Corky Bell’s turbo book. I know what you are trying to say.

  29. Jaela

It could increase back pressure, which would = more exhaust stays in the cylinder for the next cycle = more pressure = more power for same amount of fuel. However I doubt this think makes your engine 5mpg better, maybe 1mpg on a good day.

  30. Joweese

That’s what I was thinking, but I don’t think you will get get more pressure in the cylinder during the combustion cycle because less air will enter during intake as there is more pressure left after exhaust. Also, this exhaust air will be low on oxidizer, and since there will most likely be some unburnt fuel in that exhaust air which your fuel injector doesn’t know about, you will end up running a rich mixture and thus your MPG will suffer.I could be wrong though, I’m just a layman.

  31. Kael

The thing with most after market car devices: If they worked as well as advertised, don’t you think the car manufacturers would put it in the car, or at least offer it as an option?

  32. Tab

It would cost millions of dollars to do that. Imagine if it cost $100+ to add it on each car. What happens when a car manufacturer has to add this to 1,000,000 cars? If it’s not required by the gov’t, they’re not going to mess with it.

  33. Saba

Stuffing a potato wrapped in rags will also reduce your cars emissions. Buried as complete hokum.

  34. Jaguar

A useless filter you’ve got a cat converter or two already doing the same thing, don’t expect any sympathy for buying something retarded like this.

  35. Neil

THIS IS SCAM. it has been around for years, and does nothing.

  36. Phoebe

Well ***** Sheryl “I only use one square of toilet paper to wipe my ass” Crow likes it. I’m in, man. Sign me up.

  37. Edgar

Nothing beats my mustang, and by mustang I mean my horse, which I ride to work everyday, in my mind.

  38. Helladius

and it pumps Smug directly into your car!

  39. Iphigenie

I thought it would be a bicycle XD

  40. Zephyra

Do they make one big enough for my Fart can hahahha. In all seriousness, i couldnt get past, 2 mins of the video, he is a blabbering fool. and yes, all you do is stick it on the end and bolt it down, and if u have a dual tip muffler, looks like they will soak you for 2! and if ur tip is curved down, they are going to have to cut it to make it even, then once you realize that this is bologna, and you remove it, your stock exhaust will suck!

  41. Galen

This is why you shouldn’t get engineering news from a ***** hippie site. These people are incredibly stupid if they think a filter attached to the end your tailpipe increases the efficiency of a vehicle.

  42. Wray

    Atmos?

  43. Rip

Who you going to call? Mythbusters!

  44. Fielding

Auto companies spend millions of dollars and thousands of hours developing catalytic converters specifically designed for the car that they are put on to get the maximum performance and efficiency. It seem highly unlikely that some $200 gadget is the magic bullet fix-all that the auto industry has been missing. Show me some real data to back you claims then we’ll talk.
