Have you ever looked around your house and just not been able to put your finger on what it is that lets the side down? The flooring is classy, the colour scheme works well and the plump sofa is frankly inviting you to plonk yourself down on it. Do you really need to start from scratch and do the whole thing over again to get it right?

Often it is simply a little change which is needed to make the room appear better, and the television is one of the common issues which seem to get overlooked. If an old set is still working and giving a decent picture it is easy to forget that you get now get a much better one without breaking the bank on the purchase.

A more modern television will obviously give you the advantage of better image quality. This is something which you probably won’t fully appreciate until you compare the old one you are using to a more up to date one. The difference in aspects such as picture clarity and sound can often be staggering, as technology has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years.

Does it Look Good as Well Giving a Clear Picture?

Apart from this, you need to consider the aesthetic improvement which you will be able to see just be changing over to a more modern television. You are no doubt used to seeing your own TV in the corner of the room but how would things look if you got a better one in? Do you think that it would improve the look of the whole room?

The first point you will probably notice if you try to imagine this is the size of the machine. Older television set are a lot bulkier than the current range and often jut out behind in a rather unpleasant manner. Any visitor who sees a set like this will know right away that it is not particularly modern.

Slim sets are now common place in the market and if you check them out on the internet you will see that getting one isn’t going to cost you the earth by any means. Your old one doesn’t need to get chucked out either, as it could make a good addition to a bedroom or some other place where it can be used without taking away from the style of your living room.

What about if you want to hide the television altogether? This is an increasingly common trend and a smart way of doing it is with a TV mirror. These are simply frames which convert your television into a mirror when you aren’t viewing. You get a TV mirror frame hung on the wall and choose the best type of frame for your home so that it fits in seamlessly. Obviously a TV mirror frame is only going to work with a slim, modern television but this just gives you one more reason for moving away from the awkward old box which has served you well but which now drags your living room back into the previous century.

A TV mirror frame not only hides your TV – a perennial problem for interior designers – but is in itself a beautiful addition to a room. Frames made by hand, using traditional skills, are available from www.frameyourtv.co.uk to add the perfect finish touch to any room.

7 Tips on Changing the Paint Finish of Your House. Sandra wants to change the paint finish of her house. A friend of hers suggested that she uses what’s in vogue right now like the orange, yellow and aquamarine colors; however, she personally prefers the more subdued shades. Anyway, she would like to know on what possible wall finish is applicable for a mid-30′s single businesswoman like herself.

In any home interior, it is recommended to use focal points to highlight their passions. So you want to put pizzazz into your home decorating? You can do so by transforming your plain walls into focal points that can add personality and life to your home. Color, texture and pattern are essential elements for a memorable and decorative wall. Details create character and an artistic focal point. Well-planned walls can make a room anything but boring. With the easy flow of color, texture and pattern, anybody can manage to infuse details and accessories placed throughout the house.

Custom stenciling and inventive borders can, likewise, add depth to the room. Murals, wall-painted accents and other wall coverings are some of the options from which you can use for your wall finish.

Here are several helpful hints that will put a punch to your home decor:

1) Use faux (false) finishes on walls, planters, electrical wall plates and room surfaces.
2) Mix materials and fabrics in a room.
3) Update your walls with new painting techniques. Ask your local paint store for such materials or consult a design professional for proper application.
4) Create a theme by adding items that can be illustrated in a collection.
5) Add borders to the walls at the ceiling, around doorways and windows to liven up a room.
6) Add dimension, color and style by translating motifs into decorative, stencils for your wall surfaces.
7) For uneven walls, it’s best to use a Stippling effect for added depth on your walls.

Homes are so compact these days that there is hardly any sizable space for anything. Even the kitchen is squeezed into a smaller corner wanting in storage space.

Here are some tips on how to have additional storage in the kitchen:

•	Opt for a corner kitchen. It starts with the basic design of the kitchen. With it, you will have two walls to work with for your storage space. Have above-the-head cabinets installed along the two walls. Besides, a corner kitchen gives you more design options, and the flow of traffic should also be a lot smoother.

•	Choose for built-in ground-level kitchen units, in which you can fit the oven and other appliances snugly. So with the kitchen sink. The advantage of having things built in it is that it all looks so neat and so harmoniously united. You can even use the cabinet under the sink to keep your garbage can in so that you don’t rip over it. Another advantage of having a built-in oven and cooktop is that they are easier to clean than freestanding appliances.

•	Mount a long, narrow shelf along the wall, just beneath the row of head-level cabinets. This shelf, you can use to store containers of herbs, spices, salt, pepper and sauces. The shelf also makes your little cooking utensils within reach at all times.
•	Make a storage pockets along the edge of this long, narrow shelf by edging it with strong carpet binding. Tack firmly at intervals leaving gaps wide enough to slip spoons, scissors and other utensils into them.
•	For your miscellaneous cooking aids, choose to keep them in elongated and uniformly shaped glass containers. Storage, therefore, becomes more methodical and economical because they do not take up too much space in between. As much as possible, though, use colored glass. Food items deteriorate faster when kept in transparent glass containers.

•	Have wall-mounted wooden plate racks installed. Position at eye level and use them to store plates in.
•	Install cup hooks under the upper kitchen cabinets or shelves, and hang your cups and mugs together. This way, they will add color to your kitchen and at the same time be out of the way.
•	Wire mesh panels or hooks screwed onto the door add hanging and storage space to drawers and closets.
•	For kitchen utensils, make a ladder rack storage panel for the wall. Check the kitchen wall for available space for it, and measure the height and width. Cut two battens of half-inch lath in the length you need for the uprights. Then cut a number of laths for the crossbars. Screw the uprights to the wall first, and then nail the crossbars onto them at right angles, making sure that you leave half-inch gaps between them. Hang wire hooks on the slats through the gaps. Now you can hang your kitchen utensils, such as ladles and wire whisks on them.

•	Run a metal bar across the room. Then you have a place to hang your baskets and pans on.
•	.Use wicker baskets for your fruit and vegetable storage. They are decorative as well as functional.
•	Keep a small shelf for cookbooks and recipe cards.
•	If your kitchen has a cooking island in the middle, make sure it has a functional design. This means that there are cabinets for storage at the bottom and not just a hollow base. Cooking islands are ideal in compact homes because they center meal preparations in one area and family functions, such as eating and simply eating around, in the opposite area. So the kitchen and the dining area can comfortably overlap.

Did you know that people who come to your house form their opinion of you based on what your bathroom looks like?

Here are some helpful tips to make your bathroom project a positive image of you:

1.	Mold and mildew from bathtub and shower – Remove mold and mildew from around your bathtub or shower with a diluted solution of chlorine bleach in water (one cup bleach to three cups of water, increasing the bleach as necessary). Spray or sponge on this simple mixture, then wait for a few minutes. When it is time, rinse the area well with clean water. Goodbye to mold and mildew!
2.	Toilet bowl rings – These nasty rings are caused by alkaline which is present in water. Pour one or two cups of white vinegar into the toilet once a month to eliminate this problem. If it does not work for the bowl, just increase the amount of vinegar.
3.	Dull mirrors – When your bathroom mirror becomes dull from hairspray or toothpaste splash build-up, wipe the offending film off with rubbing alcohol or ammonia.
4.	Clogged drains in the sink – Here is a nifty tip to clear the sink drain. Drop three Alka-Seltzer tablets down the drain followed by a cup of white vinegar. Wait a few minutes, and then run the hot water if you have a built-in heater. Otherwise, just pour hot water down the drain. It will be running freely again, in no time.
5.	Urine odor from tile and grout – To remove urine odor from tile and grout, you need to completely remove the odor source. Pour baking soda on the spots with offensive smells. Then use a scrubber to clean the surface with bleach and detergent soap.
6.	Wipe chrome fittings such as the faucet, soap dish, tissue and glass holders and towel bars with damp cloth, using only soap and water. Dry properly to avoid water spots. Polish to restore sparkle. You may also spray with commercial furniture polish to give them a protective coating, minimizing water spots.
7.	To remove rust stains on bathroom tiles, you can use a specialized toilet bowl cleaner. Let stay about 3-5 minutes, scrub, then rinse away. If the stain persists, repeat process but always follow with water immediately. Or, apply 10% oxalic acid solution. Rinse immediately after scrubbing.
8.	Spread out wet showers curtains to dry, thus preventing mildew growth and musty odor.
9.	Do no let strong solutions like household bleaches, vinegar, lemon juice, or urine stand for any length of time in a lavatory or toilet bowl as they can cause discoloration.
10.	Train the family to use the bathroom properly and with consideration for the other users.

There is no need for extra effort to keep the bathroom sparkling-clean, fresh-smelling and germ-free. Just regularly scrub the floors and walls, toilet bowl, sink, and the metal fixtures.

5 Common Interior Design Mistakes
By B Williams

Making interior design decisions in your home are often overwhelming and stressful. There are several mistakes that many homeowners make that can be avoided with just a little thought and planning. What are the mistakes that you should refrain from making when decorating your home?

Mistake #1 – Putting too much or too large furniture into a room.
Too much furniture in a room or extra large furniture in a small room can make the room look cluttered or even smaller. Purchase furniture with the room in mind to make sure that it goes with the size of the room, as well as your needs. When placing furniture in your room, be sure that you allow enough room to breathe. This can make a big difference in how a room feels to both your family and your friends.

Mistake #2 – Not having enough lighting.
Lighting is an important component of any room. A bright and lit room can add ambience and a feeling of welcomeness like nothing else. Whether you add lamps, track lighting, or overhead light fixtures, you want to be sure that your room is well lit and inviting.

Mistake #3 – Not making the room’s design feel cohesive.
Repeat the colors throughout the room to make the whole design of the room flow and come together. Choose a color from the sofa or pillows on the couch to use on your windows or if you like your curtains, use a color from them to add color to the couch or buy a vase in the same color. By choosing colors from existing pieces in your home and buying accessories in these colors, you can bring the entire design of the room together.

Mistake #4 – Hanging pictures and mirrors too high.
Most homeowners hang their pictures too high on the walls. You want them to be at eye level, so that they can become part of the design space. The center of the art should be 5 to 5-1/2 feet from the floor, so that they will be at the right height. Showcase your art and special pieces by hanging them at a level where they will become a focal point on your walls.

Mistake #5 – Being afraid of color.
There are many homeowners who choose to leave their walls a neutral tan, cream or white color, simply because they are afraid to choose a color. This is a big mistake, as color can add quite a bit of personality and style to a room. To choose a color that you like, find curtains, a pillow, or other accessory that you like and choose a color from it. By choosing a color from a piece that you like, you are almost assured of having a wall color that you will like.

Interior design does not have to be overwhelming or stressful. By making sure that you don’t make the same common mistakes that other homeowners make, you can make better design decisions to make your home into that relaxing and beautiful space that you want and deserve.

If you have ever looked for that perfect piece of furniture you know what it feels like when you find. It’s a huge relief. You know its right because it just looks and feels right. You imagine yourself using it in your home with ease.

It could be that sofa you have been looking for. Or maybe you need the perfect dining table to entertain friends. Maybe your bedroom furniture needed upgrading. Whatever it is come have a look at a Beyond Furniture, Sydney store.
